The Quarter Jack Surgery is a research practice.
Research can:
- Find new and better ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases or conditions
- Test new ideas that could improve the lives of people receiving health or social care
- Look at the costs and benefits of making changes in the community. Examples include introducing exercise programmes or screening for cancer in certain age groups
- Help us understand how NHS and social care services can run in a more efficient way.

Clinical Practice Research Datalink
As a Research Practice, we are working with the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). This is a service which collects anonymised patient data from our system to assist with ongoing research studies.

Research with the Dorset Primary Care Clinical Research Group (DPCCRG)
We also work with local GP practices as part of the Dorset Primary Care Clinical Research Group (DPCCRG). This partnership increases opportunities for our patients to take part in a wider range of studies. We work closely with The Adam Practice in Upton, which means that some of the studies we are taking part in may involve our research participants being seen at The Adam Practice. The Quarter Jack research staff will usually see research participants at our Research Clinic at the Quarter Jack surgery, but sometimes they may be seen at the Adam Practice Upton surgery by either our research team or the Adam Practice Research team.
Current research projects
DURATION-UTI Study (open);
This research aims to find the shortest antibiotic treatment duration needed to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women effectively. We will also look at the impact of each antibiotic and treatment duration on antibiotic resistance in bacteria found in the patient’s urine.
OPTIMIZE2 Study (open);
This trial will establish whether deprescribing (stopping) common drugs that lower blood pressure is safe in the elderly population.
The study will attempt to answer;
- What is the effect of deprescribing on hospital admissions and death.
- Does deprescribing affect health-related quality of life
- Does deprescribing offer value for money to the NHS
INDIGO (open to recruitment at QJS);
INDIGO COMMUNITY: To understand the long-term outcomes and service use of patients living beyond CA diagnosis, eligible patients may receive a message with a link to answer a study questionnaire.
OPACE (open to recruitment at QJS);
- Optimising azithromycin prevention treatment in COPD to reduce exacerbations. This study looks at Continued azithromycin as prophylaxis for COPD patient for 24 months. Eligible patients will receive an invite.
Azure (DPCCRG trial at the Adam Practice Upton) - open to recruitment.
The purpose of this clinical trial is to assess the effect of a trial drug called AZD0780 compared with placebo in reducing the risk of major cardiovascular event, such as heart attack or stroke, in patients who have had a previous Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease event or are at high risk of a first Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease event. AZD0780 is a tablet that is taken once a day.
Who can participate?
This study will be enrolling approximately 15100 people globally. You may be eligible to participate if you:
- Are at least 18 years of age at the time of signing the informed consent form
- Are at risk or have had a Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease event e.g heart attack or stroke
- Are taking a maximum tolerated dose of a statin
- Do not have uncontrolled hypertension (systolic BP >160mmHg or diastolic BP >110mmHg)
- Do not have uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (HbA1c >9.5%)
- Do not have uncontrolled hypothyroidism (TSH >1.5 x ULN)
- Are willing to use approved forms of contraception during the study
