HPV Vaccination
During 2008/2009 the Department of Health is allowing practices to offer Cervarix to women born between 1/9/90 and 31/8/91.
You may be aware of the recently launched National Cervical Cancer immunisation programme. Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This vaccination offers you protection against the two types that cause the majority of cases.
There are two vaccines on the market, Cervarix and Gardasil and the NHS has decided to offer Cervarix. The government is offering Cervarix free via the NHS to females born between 1/9/90 and 31/8/99 to be given as a staggered programme over 4 years. Female patients in the current catch-up year have been sent letters inviting them to make an appointment for the vaccination.
There are some important differences between the two vaccines which we feel you should be aware of.
Both vaccines are highly effective at reducing the risk of cervical cancer in later years but Cervarix may produce a longer lasting and stronger response (so far theoretical). At present the vaccines have been effective for a period of 7 years and the cover is predicted to last 20-30 years.
Gardasil is the only vaccine to offer protection against genital warts (a significant condition but not often discussed).
There is concern that the Government decision was based on economics and that an opportunity to also vaccinate against genital warts has been missed.
Both vaccines cost the same when bought by consumers.
Please note these vaccinations represent a tremendous step forward in preventative health care, they appear to be safe and we would encourage all to take up one of the vaccines but there is a choice to be made.
This choice also has an economic implication as the Cervarix vaccine will be free (to NHS patients) within the constraints of the catch-up schedule but Gardasil will cost recipients £450-£600 in the private market. As your registered GP’s we are unable to offer you the vaccine outside of the national programme as there is no funding and nor are we allowed to provide it to you privately. Thus if you wish to be vaccinated and are not eligible for the free vaccine as detailed above then we have negotiated a heavily discounted rate through a local practice for the full course of either vaccine (Gardasil or Cervarix-if wanted earlier). Whilst many people may not be able to afford this option or may object to having to pay for this we would like to reiterate that the Cervarix vaccine is possibly the best one at cancer prevention, it represents a tremendous advance in health care and is FREE via the NHS and we recommend that women are vaccinated with one or other vaccine.
Please note the vaccines are not licensed for males or females older than 26 but trials are underway.
In summary, females are entitled to Cervarix on the NHS according to the catch-up schedule, but please note:
- Individuals born before the 1st Sept. 1990 are not covered by the programme.
- The programme cannot vaccinate the girls before they are due
- The programme does not offer Gardasil.
If you have decided to have the vaccination please note the following options:
If you are registered with The Quarter Jack Surgery and wish to be vaccinated with Cervarix according to the NHS programme free of charge (i.e. born between 1/9/90 and 31/8/91) then please book an appointment at the surgery via your registered GP telephone number stating it is for the NHS HPV vaccination. You will need to complete a consent form prior to vaccination. PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THE AGE GROUP STATED.
If you would like HPV vaccination privately then please telephone Frankie on 01202 848261. We can offer you an appointment at the Quarter Jack Surgery if you are not registered here, or suggest who to contact if you are registered here. You will need to complete a consent form and medical questionnaire prior to vaccination.
Cost: £130 per vaccination, including consultation.
The vaccine can be started at any time acknowledging that it is recommended to be given as 3 doses, with the 2nd dose 1 month after the first vaccine and the 3rd dose 6 months after the first vaccine.
